Missing search

The tags/keywords navigation isn't always useful. For example, if one wants to return to a previously seen message, it's not.

This will maybe become more visible as the number of messages slowly grows (they are less than 100 now).

There probably needs to be a search field.

It is not obvious how to inject it into the current interface without creating more problems (confusion) than benefits.

The confusion would maybe come from a conflict with the existing names/keywords fields in the black/blue rectangles. How to differentiate the search field(s) from them is not very clear. Just a 'search' button?

Maybe the ability to edit (and probably delete) one's own messages.

Rating should return to be clickable by any visitor without requiring login.

I think that replies should really be called comment and should be available without requiring a registration, too.

It lacks an 'about' page and a tagline. As a wannabe model, it's probably a luxury that could be avoided.

The current interface would probably benefit from a bunch of extra wording.

There could be a few alternative interfaces.
We are talking about very similar alternatives with different colors and styles but having in common the basic interface game.
I think it could be interesting seeing it pretending to be a forum, a wiki and a mailing list archive. Maybe others.

Don't add quote-back. Consensus in cutting-edge not geeky forums is not to use it. Here's some reasons why (there are others):

1. It gets kludgy as discussions go re:re:re:re:

2. customer service pressures 'cuz newbies never know understand how to do it

3. just about gotta rely on javascript, and it'll be browser compatibility nightmare

4. if, per my suggestion, you add threading (i.e. add "reply" button to each posting in a thread, and, after posting, show who's replying to whom), it's easy enough to trace context.

5. you've got this voting system to purge bad stuff. But...bad stuff will live on forever via quoteback (this is a very very serious concern in hi-traffic forums...again, I've run huge ones).

You're envisioning a bloggy system, where it's all about the OP. The majority of forums don't work this way, though. Especially in large forums, where there's acculteration, you get community spirit which results in back-and-forth and digression within threads.


re: interfaces, that's good stuff. But maybe get the core stuff figured out first, though? Otherwise the tail could wind up wagging the dog. E.g. the idea of super-tagging (to create a hybrid tag/conventional forum) could affect this greatly.

Per the issue of blogginess, I keep wishing that the homepage scroll would show me last poster to a thread rather than OP.

E.g., if it takes you a month to reply to stuff (just ribbing you), it'd be nice to see at a glance when you've pitched back into a topic. I keep seeing your name there and figure you've chimed in.....

I am just in favor of letting guests vote on glorum.com (currently a very low-volume implementation; it also has a purpose as a demo).

I don't expect it to be an option for an active forum.
